If you find you want to leave Tibetan Buddhism because too many things don’t make sense anymore, or because the harmful actions of a teacher or the cultlike behavior of the sangha has destroyed your faith, and if you have already taken refuge and highest yoga tantra empowerments in this system, and especially if you have participated in long yidam retreats, it is very hard to just walk away. You have made a pact with the guru and the deities, and from my experience, they don’t let you walk way. After I was attacked in the ritual with the effigy, I started to experience full on possession. It felt like demonic possession, even though it was coming from the root guru who I had loved and served for many years. I had no way to deal with this evil, no way to fight it because it was so powerful and relentless. I finally stumbled upon a book by Msgr. Stephen Rossetti called “The Diary of an American Exorcist.” In reading, I saw parallels with the cases he wrote about and what I was experiencing. I reached out to him, and he helped me when my Tibetan teachers and yidam were attacking me. We are taught that the lineage masters are great Bodhisattvas who wouldn’t harm a flea, but the truth is that they do wrathful practices against human students who question or criticize them. The more deeply you have integrated yourself with the practice and with the guru, the more legal rights they have to attack and destroy you. I know this is hard to hear and many won’t believe it. This is for those who do understand what I am talking about and who have experienced demonic oppression from their teachers and are seeking relief.
